Have You Checked the Ingredients of Your Beauty Products Lately

Always Read The Labels Before Buying Anything

Have you ever checked what’s in that skin cream you’re using? Or the latest brand of conditioner you just put in the bathroom? You might not even be aware, but you could be using beauty products that are dangerous to your body. Even products that claim to be using natural components will, to some degree, contain chemicals that could be potentially toxic over long use. So be very careful and always read the ingredients!

Harmful Chemicals in Your Beauty Products

  • Petrochemicals
Petrochemicals may appear in the ingredient label as petroleum jelly, methanol or methyl acohol, isopropanol or isopropyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol or ethanol. They are commonly found in skin astringents, perfumes, and colognes. Petrochemicals may cause headaches, vomiting, dizziness, and in worse cases they can send you into a coma. The next time you buy yourself a facial cleanser, make sure to check the label for petrochemicals.
  • Sulfate detergents
Sulfate-based detergents are also known as sodium laureth sulfates or lauryl sulfates. They are components of a number of shampoos, bubble baths and shower gels. They can cause a breakdown in immunity, and catalyze the body’s absorption of nitrates when used in combination with other chemicals.
  • PEGS and PGs
Also known as polyethylene glycol and propylene glycol, PEGS and PGs are found in a wide range of beauty products, and even hygiene essentials such as deodorant, baby powder, mascara, after shave and a number of others. The scary thing about PEGs and PGs is that they are known carcinogens, and exposure may lead to negative systemic effects. That means it affects not just one part of your body, but the whole of it. Too much exposure to these chemicals may lead to brain, kidney, and liver malfunction.
  • Preservatives
Formaldehyde is a component typically found in laboratories, where it is used to stop or prevent decay. Paraben preservatives have essentially the same function and can be found in shaving gel, toothpaste, sunscreen and shampoos. Other preservatives include butylparaben, methylparaben, ethylparaben, and propylparaben. Parabens have been linked to cancer.
  • Artificial dyes
Dyes are a more visible additive in our beauty products because you wouldn’t have any color without them. Still, studies have proven that artificial dyes contain components that are carcinogenic. Basically, you need to watch out for products that contain an F&DC label accompanied by a color and number.
  • Perfumes and colognes
Few people know that perfume companies are not bound by law to reveal the ingredients in their products. What makes them different from other beauty products though is that we willingly inhale perfumes not knowing if we are exposing our body to chemicals that has ill effects.

So start checking the labels in your beauty products and scan them for ingredients that can potentially harm your health. It is best to avoid exposing yourself and your loved ones to these harmful chemicals.
