Prevent Hangnails and Possible Nasty Infections
It has been said that an ouce of prevention is better than a pound of cure and this is definitely true. This old saying applies to hangnails as well. Although many dread the thought of getting a hangnail, many do not give much thought about preventing getting one. It is true that a hangnail is not that serious of a health concern but if left untreated it can lead to serious infections.
Common Causes of Hangnails
Common causes of hangnails are nailbiting, a weak nail bed, a manicure gone south and frequent clipping of the cuticles. Another reason is not knowing how to properly cut the nails. Many of us are guilty of doing these things. So it is not surprising to learn that hangnails are pretty common to many people.
So How Can You Avoid Hangnails?
Moisturise your hands and nails with Moroccan Argan Oil
Even though you can easily get hangnails, you can easily avoid them too. A great way to prevent getting a hangnail is keeping your hands and nail beds moisturised. The Moroccan Argan oil is a perfect weapon in preventing hangnails. You can use it to moisturise your hands as well as your nail beds. The Moroccan Argan oil is packes with Vitamin E which has been proven to be a potent moisturiser. It also contains essential fatty acids which help moisturise as well as strengthen the nails. All you need to do is coat your nails regularly or at least 3 times a week to keep them moisturised. Remember to do this simple task so that you can avoid getting a hangnail.
Stop Biting Your Nails
Nail biting is not a healthy habit and this should already stop you from doing this. Not only will you be making it easier for you to get hangnails when you chew on your nails, you are also exposing yourself to different microbes that can cause nasty infections.
Reward Yourself with a Good Manicure
A manicure surely makes one feel pampered. It is a great stress buster! And when done right, it can also prevent hangnails. When you give yourself a manicure, be sure not to cut your cuticles. You should also see to it that you are cutting your nails properly. You should cut straight across and finish it off by rounding the corners with a nail file. Remember to file gently. If you already know that you can not do a good job in giving yourself a manicure, let a trained professional do it for you. A trained nail professional would know how to trim your nails the right way making sure to push back your cuticles gently and not cut them.
Too Late to Prevent a Hangnail?
Don’t feel too bad if you were to late to take the preventive measures. Next time then you’ll know better. So the question now is, how you should treat hangnails. In treating hangnails you should remember that there should be no ripping, tearing or biting involved in the process. All you need to do is soak the finger or fingernails with a hangnail in warm water and clip the dry hangnails. Regularly moisturise the hands and nail beds. Continue to do the process until the hangnail heals completely. For deep hangnails a hot soaking and bandage may be necessary. Should the area around the hangnail gets swollen, becomes red or become filled with pus, a visit to the doctor is highly recommended.
